
Sarah K Howell, DSW, LCSW-S is the the founder of STAR (Survivors of torture, asylees and refugees) Counseling and Consultation and STAR Support a 501c3. Sarah was the school social worker at Las Americas Newcomer School, and supported Jane Long Academy in Houston ISD and managed the social work department at Houston reVision. Sarah has built her career working with immigrants and refugees and specializes in trauma and torture survivors within those populations. In her clinical practice Sarah enjoys treating complex trauma with a focus on complex PTSD, dissociative disorders, borderline and antisocial personality disorders and bipolar disorder. Additionally, Sarah is passionate about educating others about trauma and trauma informed education. Sarah is an advocate for the immigrant and refugee community as well as mental health services for youth. She has published book chapters on refugee trauma and school-based interventions for immigrant and refugee youth. She has traveled extensively to understand the clients she works with, including trips to Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya and Northern Triangle countries; Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to trace the journey Unaccompanied minors are making north and the experience of those that are forced to return. She co-facilitates the Central American Minors Working Group in Houston. TX. Sarah received her bachelors from Texas A&M in International Politics and Diplomacy, her Masters in Social Work with a specialization in Political Social Work and her Doctorate in Clinical Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania with a focus on Hispanic Latine Child Sexual Abuse. She lives in Houston with her daughter.
